SEEN Teens

Fridays -  9am - 2pm - $60 per session
Ages 12 - 16ish

At SEEN Teens  our hope is to provide a learning environment where students feel safe, valued and seen.  Our class is limited to 12 students to maintain a relaxed atmosphere, and encourage students to share their ideas freely.

Students learn through a variety of hands on and discussion based tasks. We strive to find a balance between student led learning following personal interests and extending learning by exploring new topics or ideas.

Our activities focus on creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. This flows through all curriculum topics, with a particular interest in Science, Technology and the Arts.

At SEEN Wellbeing comes first. We begin our day with grounding activities such as breathing exercises and mindfulness. Our lessons provide an opportunity to build social and emotional literacy. Students are respected as equals and encouraged to listen to their bodies cues for rest and meal breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a registered school?

No, we are not a registered school. Our students are homeschooled (with homeschool exemptions), attending school part time, or are excused from mainstream schooling one day per week with the permission of their school principal.

Are your teachers qualified?

Emma is a qualified teacher with six years teaching experience. She has worked in primary schools working at a variety of age levels, and has taught high school level students through private tutoring and with health school.  You can find more information on Emma's experience and teaching philosophy here.

Who can attend?

We pride ourselves on our inclusivity. With our small classroom sizes and break-out spaces, we are particularly suitable for children who can feel overwhelmed in mainstream public schools or those who need a little extra nurturing. Our activities are carefully selected to be accessible for children of different academic abilities.  Unfortunately, due to  the design of our venue  we cannot take students who have a tendency to wander off.

What subjects do you teach?

We have an emphasis on skills rather than subjects, with a focus on emotional literacy, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. Our lessons are highly interactive with hands-on learning, discussions and group work. We believe it is important to teach a broad curriculum including Science, Technology, Social Studies and the Arts. We aim to empower children by supporting them to gain a broader knowledge of the world in which they operate and providing authentic contexts for learning (which tends to pull different curriculum subjects together within one project).

Which class should my child attend?

There is an intentional overlap in the ages of our classes. Emma will give you a ring to discuss the needs of your child and which class would be the best fit. This decision is based on the child's social and emotional stage and class dynamics, not their academic ability, as all curriculum levels can be catered to in each classroom.

How does a mixed-age classroom work?

Children are encouraged to support each other, whilst focusing on their own learning goals, rather than comparing themselves to others (which often happens when children are segregated by age). In life we work with a variety of people with different strengths, why should school be any different?
